Horizontal Wood Fencing

Boards run horizontally between posts for a contemporary appearance.

Horizontal cedar boards fixed to vertical rails, showing the grain.

About horizontal wood fencing

Horizontal fencing runs the boards across the posts rather than up and down. It reads as more contemporary and works well with modern architecture and clean landscaping lines.

Because the boards span between posts without vertical rails to stiffen them, post spacing, board thickness and board selection matter more than on a traditional fence. We will discuss the specification with you before it goes into the estimate.

Scope

What is included, and what to think about

Typical inclusions

  • Layout and post spacing suited to horizontal boards
  • Post setting
  • Horizontal board installation to the specified gap
  • Gate installation where included
  • Cleanup of installation debris

Practical considerations

Things that genuinely affect the work, said plainly before you commit.

  • Closer post spacing is usually required, which affects material and labour.
  • Board selection matters more; bowed boards are more visible when run horizontally.
  • Sloped ground is handled differently than on a vertical picket fence.
  • Horizontal boards can be easier to climb, which matters for pool and pet enclosures.
