Fence Gate Repair

Correction of sagging, dragging, sticking and misaligned gates.

A heavy strap hinge and its fixings on a timber gate.

About fence gate repair

Most gate problems come from one of three places: the post has moved, the frame has racked, or the hardware has failed. We diagnose which it is before quoting the repair, because the fix is different in each case.

Where a gate has been repaired repeatedly, we will tell you honestly whether rebuilding it is the better value.

Scope

What is included, and what to think about

Typical inclusions

  • Inspection of gate, posts, frame and hardware
  • Re-squaring and bracing where required
  • Hinge, latch or hardware replacement as specified
  • Gate post resetting where included in the estimate
  • Adjustment and testing of the gate swing

Practical considerations

Things that genuinely affect the work, said plainly before you commit.

  • A gate can only hang true if its posts are sound; post work may be required.
  • Seasonal wood movement means a gate may need adjustment again over time.
  • Original hardware is not always available; equivalent hardware may be used.
  • Heavier gates need heavier hardware, which changes the scope.

Questions

Fence Gate Repair: frequently asked

Not covered here? Ask us directly — we would rather answer it before you commit than after.

Why does my gate sag or drag?

Usually one of three causes: the gate post has moved, the gate frame has racked out of square, or the hardware was undersized for the gate. We diagnose which it is before quoting, because the fix is different in each case.
